Turkey is standing firm against Sweden and Finland joining NATO, even as both countries have formally submitted their applications. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has urged the military alliance to understand, respect and support Turkey’s concerns over the membership bids. The accession process is expected to take only a few weeks, but will require the approval of all 30 allied parliaments. Ratification could take up to a year. The move by Sweden and Finland marks a sharp departure from their decades-long policy of a neutral military posture.
