Sri Lanka’s political crisis worsens as Rajapaksa’s ruling coalition loses majority in parliament

Sri Lanka is spiralling toward bankruptcy and a political meltdown. More than 40 lawmakers have walked out of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s ruling coalition. The island nation has been grappling with power cuts and shortages due to an economic and foreign exchange crisis. Public anger is at a fever pitch. There has been a heavy police presence outside parliament as protesters continue to demand that the president and prime minister step down. A large group rallied outside the attorney- general’s office, while crowds have also stormed the homes of several government figures.
