Sri Lanka’s prime minister has warned of a critical food shortage as the island nation battles a devastating economic crisis. The cash-strapped country has appointed nine more ministers to the administration, but the crucial post of finance minister remains vacant. It’s hoped the position can be filled by next week, otherwise negotiations with the International Monetary Fund could be delayed. Colombo is facing a dire shortage of foreign exchange, fuel and medicines, and economic activity has slowed to a crawl.
