Industrial areas, manufacturing cars and transport systems use massive quantities of fossil fuels and are a major source of carbon emissions in cities, according to the World Bank. But there is another culprit that warrants attention – real estate, or buildings. A study focusing on more than 30 global cities shows the real estate sector accounting for 60 per cent of overall carbon emissions in urban centres.
