Professor Kazuo Yamamoto — the first Asian to win the Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize — received the award from President Halimah Yacob on April 18. The scientist from the University of Tokyo pioneered an advanced water treatment technology in the 1980s that is now used globally, including in the making of NEWater in Singapore. Prof Yamamoto developed the submerged membrane bioreactor technology, which combines advanced filtration processes with a biological wastewater treatment process.
