In the final stretch of a testy campaign before Monday’s (May 9) ballot, Philippine election rivals traded allegations of dirty tricks and vote-rigging. The presidential vote has shaped into a two-way race between Leni Robredo and Ferdinand Marcos Junior, son of a late dictator. Mr Marcos Senior imposed martial law on the Philippines in 1972, supposedly to counter communism. Thousands were arrested, tortured and killed. But many who believe that Mr Marcos Senior provided stability and security feel that his son would do the same.
