India is battling a rapid surge of COVID-19 cases as the Omicron variant replaces Delta in its cities. Over 100,000 cases were reported on Jan 7, up from 10,000 just eight days ago. Officials are expecting daily infections to surpass the record of 400,000 set in May, with the peak expected in early February. New Delhi has imposed a weekend curfew from Jan 7, while Mumbai has closed schools and imposed restrictions for people at cinemas.
