Millions in Afghanistan at risk of famine due to drought, economic collapse

Afghanistan is facing mass starvation. The World Food Programme has estimated that nearly nine million people are one step away from famine, with up to a million children under the age of five at risk of dying from malnutrition. A record 23 million people — more than half the population — are facing acute hunger. The UN agency said a crippling drought and the economic meltdown from the Taliban’s return to power are to blame. China has issued a fresh call for the US to release frozen assets to ease the worsening situation.
