India’s Supreme Court has affirmed social benefits for same-sex couples and non-traditional families. This has given hope to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBTQ) activists that the move could pave the way for recognition of same-sex marriage. However, observers have warned that could take years in a country steeped in tradition. In 2018, a big step came when the Supreme Court decriminalised gay sex.
