India reports over 90,000 new COVID-19 cases as authorities rush to bolster healthcare system

India is scrambling to contain a rapidly mounting COVID-19 wave as the Omicron variant ravages big cities. On Dec 6, daily infections nearly hit 91,000 — a more than 55% jump from the day before. According to government data, the coronavirus is now spreading 21 times faster than at the peak of the second wave in 2021. Officials are now rushing to ensure there are enough medical supplies and beds to handle the rising patient load. Some models have predicted more than one million daily cases by February.
