Food security is under increasing threat as the world’s most vulnerable are paying more but receiving less for their outlays. A new UN report has flagged risks to food security. The biggest conundrum is that rising input costs are limiting producers’ ability to increase output. This means food prices could continue to rise. For this year, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization is already predicting that the global import bill could rise to a record US$1.8 trillion. That is about 3 per cent higher than last year.
