Australia’s New South Wales and Victoria states report record COVID deaths

Australia’s two most populous states have reported record COVID-19 deaths. Victoria and New South Wales have each recorded 21 new fatalities. Victoria has also logged over 40,000 new infections. Officials have warned the healthcare system is under strain, with around 6,600 staff off work after testing positive or coming into contact with confirmed cases. In Victoria, high-risk workers — including those in healthcare, emergency services, hotel quarantine facilities and food distribution centres — will be required to have three vaccine doses before they can go to work.
