Australia sees COVID-19 infections soar to new peak with over 72,000 cases reported

COVID-19 cases in Australia have soared to a new peak. Over 72,000 fresh infections were reported on Jan 6, exceeding the previous day’s high of nearly 65,000. The government has relaxed testing requirements and shortened quarantine as isolation rules have been causing labour shortages and straining businesses and supply chains. Long queues persist at PCR testing sites nationwide. People who test positive via rapid antigen tests no longer need to have a PCR test to confirm the result, but there are concerns that this will impact the accuracy of logging COVID-19 case numbers.
