Australia and New Zealand have voiced concerns about the potential for a Chinese military presence on the Solomon Islands. A leaked document indicates Beijing could boost its military presence in the South Pacific island nation, including with navy ship visits. It is not immediately clear when the security agreement might be finalised, signed or go into effect.
New Zealand’s Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has urged Solomon Islands’ leaders not to look beyond the “Pacific family” when considering the country’s security.
